Our History

Boarding Australia’s history dates back to 1993 when the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) suggested that an association should be formed that would provide ongoing support and training for staff in boarding facilities throughout Australia.

A National Hostels Working Party (NHWP) was established to identify the issues relating to training provisions for staff working in boarding. As a result, the National Association for Rural Student Accommodation (NARSA) was officially launched on 13 July 1995, at a hostels training forum held in Hay, NSW. We were renamed Boarding Australia in 2011, to better reflect the breadth of our membership base across Australia.
